Freund’s incomplete adjuvant
Freund’s Incomplete Adjuvant is a commonly used immunological adjuvant that contains non-metabolizable oils (paraffin oil) and surfactant (Arlacel A). Components are thoroughly mixed in controlled proportions and autoclaved prior to being vialed.
Features of Freund’s Incomplete Adjuvant (FIA):
- Also called Incomplete Freund’s Adjuvant (IFA).
- FIA can be utilized to produce water-in-oil emulsions of antigens.
- By forming a depot at the injection site and stimulating the production of antibody-producing plasma cells, FIA predominantly induces a Th2-biased response.
- FIA is typically used for subsequent boost immunizations.
