Description
Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that is used to treat a number of bacterial infections. Also known as chlornitromycin is acts against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Originally used to treat typhoid, it is now mostly used to treat staphylococcal brain abscesses due to its excellent blood-brain barrier penetration. It is listed on the World Health Organizations list of essential medicines.
